At its core, Pagan Online is a game of dynamic and fastpaced action. You will experience gameplay that is responsive, fast, and satisfying – and nothing’s more satisfying than crushing, slicing, and smashing your way through hordes of enemies in a brutal and mesmerizing display of quick thinking and skill.
It is easy to pick up but difficult to master – a good thing to keep in mind after your 108th death. As you become more battlehardened, your renown grows and doors open for you – both to greater power and greater foes.

A class for every player, a hero for every taste
These aren’t just your typical RPG classes! The playable characters in Pagan Online are inspired by old folks’ tales and stories our grandmothers used to tell us when we were kids. From nomad knights to beastly abominations, they are familiar and yet like nothing you’ve ever tried before.
Every hero has their own abilities, playstyles, and their own weapons and attacks, so you could be forgiven for thinking you’re playing a different game when you take up arms as another hero.
Carry out devastating combos with skills in your repertoire and do whatever it takes to come out on top – leech the blood of your downed foes to stay standing, summon the might of Perun himself in a thunderfist, or channel the elements to unleash raw destruction.

Your hero, your style
If you’re going to be looking at your hero constantly, you might as well look at something nice. A hero is a hero no matter what they wear of course, but you gotta admit, the deep red of a blood spatter would look so fetching on your green robes.
You can pick from a wide variety of classspecific armor sets for each hero. Not only can you upgrade and customize heroes to your liking, but you can also use unique skins and shaders so the enemy commanders will know exactly who is coming to end them.

Wield weapons of legend
Action RPGs can’t work without loot. We all love it and your enemies love to drop it. Pagan Online takes it up a notch with a unique crafting system in which you can create a weapon tailormade for you and how you prefer to play. Whether you’re dead set on squeezing that extra speed percentage for fast flaying, or if you want to be a Jackofalltrades with more balanced stats, crafting in Pagan Online redefines the term ‘legendary item’.

Hey everyone this is Thyworm and today, I wanted to create one final video about a game I have covered extensively the last year. It’s a game that’s close to my heart, for various reasons. Pagan Online. One final video, to cherish some of the best moments this game had to offer, to see why the game didn’t succeed in the end, and to hopefully provide an explanation and a bit of history on this games’ development. And because I can now finally get rid of the 600GB of Pagan Online footage I have stored on external hard drives, because I knew this day would come, and I knew I wanted to make this video about it. This is that video, that has been in my mind since August 2019. It marks the end of an era. The end of Pagan Online.

  1. Even if I haven't played it and only by watching this video, I can tell that the gamefeel is good and similar to MOBAs which imo is the perfect feel to not just be another Diablo clone. The animations and skills look cool.

    But then again, a good game with little marketing is just sad.

  2. I actually bought this game last year MOSTLY BECAUSE of the WASD controls. I only played it for a couple of hours though. I wanted to try all of the other heroes but I simply do not have the luxury of time. I'm sad to see the online and co-op features go. I wish I could've tried playing this one with somebody. I would be very happy to finally get to play this offline though coz it's mostly single-player and campaigns anyway. I hope they could still come up with more content for this game.

  3. Fantastic video, Thyworm. What I will miss the most about the game is the community. Streaming the game with all you people was so much fun, even though it was a pretty small community. The nights of theorycrafting, trying new builds, finding funny glitches (and not so funny ones) and just hanging out with new met people in twitchchat was just a great gaming experience. Time to move on I guess. Lots of love to the community and madhead <3

  4. More games need to do what Pagan did. Online game fail? Salvage it and turn the game offline single player instead of a middle finger to players and just fuck off, like Marvel Heroes and Dragon Dogma Online.

  5. The publisher takes some blame for major things (launch date for example) but the developers lied to the community. The only people the developers catered to were supporters and/or content creators. But even that catering was false promises. They didn't listen to anybody and made what they wanted to make. And that's fantastic, but that's also why they are back to making point and click games. Any interaction I had with the devs always ended up being discarded, while some ass kiss in the Discord got smiley faces and love. The devs don't understand marketing and being friendly to customers…. okay, but to be a bold faced liar to everyone other than the people that kiss up to them, which is what I experienced, that's a different story.

    I knew this game would fail shortly after I bought it because I got involved in the Discord and saw the clear bias towards the 5 people that told them they got it right. Unfortunately, they needed more than 5 people to buy it. Ah well. The game itself? It's fine. WASD in an action game is fine. If people don't understand how or use WASD, either learn or the hell with it. If there are disabilities of course, options should exist. But I think some people don't know or care to learn WASD, which is fine, but that's like buying an Xbox expecting to play Mario World and then blaming the Xbox for not having that ability. It's on them. Having those 1 shot barrels wasn't difficult, it was bullshit. The "hardcore" playerbase were mostly (MOSTLY) ass kissing suck ups. The devs liked it though. Having a 10 minute side quest load (and usually disconnect from the servers forcing you to restart the game) for longer than it took to die to… a barrel… yeah. Dark Souls is something you learn. Dying to an exploding barrel that was sometimes off screen and had a bigger blast radius than almost every actual enemy attack in the game? You don't learn anything except to make better choices with games to purchase. Still, I beat it… and then the end game. Nice 10 wave arena of snore. And if it wasn't for the lies, that would've been fine, but no, of course they had to promise these big fucking patches, because everybody knows, if you add fucking before your point in a commercial setting, some fucking idiot will buy the fucking product. Fucking fuck.

    In short, my friends and I will never buy a Mad Head Games product again, and many people feel the same way. I'd say I'm sad, but in this case, they got what they deserve.

  6. I started playing this game yesterday and i think it is quite good. WASD control is fine and fits this game well but tbh i found talent trees to be very shallow and all these missions/quests in the game are way too short. It really seems unfinished which is shame as i think gameplay and look of the game is fine.

  7. Found your channel by searching for Pagan videos and subscribed immediately. This channel is still woefully under-subscribed for the quality of the content it provides. Was a great trip down a too short memory lane although ironically now it is single player may actually go back and see if can get the top tier gear for a character. Levelled everyone to 30 but could never do the top tier content to get the top tier gear. Out of interest have you ever played Warhammer 40,000 Inquisitor Martyr / Prophecy. As wasn't a fan of Farming PoE league started playing this as they just added seasons equivalent and really enjoyed it. A bit slower paced than PoE which I prefer as not a fan of speed meta. edit Okay checked your videos and you did post a first impressions which I even watched so guess the question changes to have you played it more recently post patch 2.0

  8. It was great having you as part of the creator team. I think the thing I'll miss most is the leaderboards. Without them I've lost a lot of motivation to keep playing the game casually. I think if they kept them in, it might have stayed one of my primary games even as Single Player. Hopefully they add some kind of leaderboard again, whether its through Steam Leaderboards or a Personal Best.

    I think what drove me away the most originally though was after winning the Might & Glory Club contest, there was no reward whatsoever other than being mentioned on the site blog (the top M&GC players were promised content creation guidance / sponsorship AFAIR)

    That all said, I agree "game was extremely hard and almost unplayable for most" albeit *Vaserati laughs in hardcore*

  9. I remember watching your vids for this game. I wanted to play it SO much but…. WASD…. never happening. I had hoped they would move away from that but.. alas nope.

    As you state, the release date was the End of this game. Its a shame, a real shame.

  10. Re-installed 3x to see whether it's improved. Game's so smooth & showed promising gameplay loop. But combat is so un-impactful it feels like I'm slashing grass & maps are so small & linear it gets repetitive quick.

  11. Thank you for making this! As an ARPG player, I was watching this post-release to see if it improved enough to be worth the risk of purchase. And the last time I checked in was when the announcement was made that all online functionality would be removed. And here in the U.S.A., it was completely removed from the Steam store as well. Very sad, especially after watching this video.

  13. I tried it during alpha because I thought it was f2p, I didn't like it and later I find it was pt2, and expensive.
    I guess I'm not the only one who didn't like the game with strong moba elements

  15. I haven't played it, but at launch i know that arena-wave based-content was the thing to do, and that shit gets boring fast 😀
    Also, why call it Pagan Online when it launched without multiplayer? It's misleading and they totally deserved the low rating they got 😀

  17. This game was fun but i had a hell of a time getting it to run smoothly without audio issues. Couple that with not being able to co op the campaign on launch and i quickly lost interest. A shame since the combat was fun and I really wanted an actual co op action rpg that requires skill first over numbers.

  18. its generally hard to get into ARPG market as an indie studio, pagan died, wolcen died, torchlight 3 is absolute trash, the only game doing good is path of exile and diablo 4 will be amazing too. I am kinda sad for pagan, i bought it, had my 30 hours of fun, and left, but the studio seemed really nice and kind , hardworking people 😡

  19. I really loved Pagan when I tried it. Not a lot of games have similar controls to Gauntlet 2013 or Battlerite. I almost want to buy it for the single player, but I'm not spending 35 bucks on a incomplete game. Maybe 15.

  20. As much as they copied Diablo, they didn't copy it enough. WASD-movement, zero character custimization and the locked-area combat was some reasons why it died. It had no future and it seemed like the developers quickly realized that just weeks after they launched in EA on Steam.

  21. I have ALMOST bought this game several times, but I kept hearing that the game pad controls never felt good. It's really too bad, since I want to play a class-based hack'n'slash and I don't really care about online multiplayer as much as most people. I love how the combat seemed methodical and skill-focused. Your vids kept me interested in the project during early access, but at the same time led me to the conclusion that in its current form it wasn't for me.
