Orthotics & Prosthetics for Enhanced (O.P.En.) Mobility Lab
The O.P.En. Mobility Lab at the University of Delaware focuses on orthotic and prosthetic biomechanics. Our lab’s research aims to optimize the design and prescription of orthotic and prosthetic devices to enable all orthotic and prosthetic users to reach their optimal functional level. To achieve this goal, we employ engineering and biomechanics tools and approaches, including instrumented motion capture technology, computeraided design (CAD), and additive manufacturing (3D printing). Hear From Orthotics and Prosthetics Students
The one word that most accurately describes this profession is diversity. As an orthoprosthetist, you may choose to work in a variety of settings. Orthoprosthetists help adults and children who need assistance in the way of custom fabricated devices and specialized rehabilitation.
“Orthotics is the evaluation, fabrication, and custom fitting of orthopedic braces, known as “orthoses.” Orthotics combines knowledge of anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, biomechanics, and engineering. Orthoses are externally applied devices used to modify the structural and functional characteristics of the neuromuscular and skeletal system.” “Prosthetics is the evaluation, fabrication, and custom fitting of artificial limbs, known as “prostheses.” Prostheses enhance the function and lifestyle of persons with limb loss. The prosthesis must be a unique combination of appropriate materials, alignment, design, and construction.”

Custom Orthotics vs OvertheCounter Insoles
When you want to prevent or alleviate foot pain and joint issues—such as knee, hip, back and ankle pain—you will find the most common product for that purpose is an orthotic insert or insole for your footwear. Insoles and inserts work because foot and joint pain is often a symptom of misalignment and imbalance—your body is interacting with the ground in a way that causes unnecessary wear and tear when you stand, walk, or run. The proper orthotic insert brings your body back into alignment and addresses the foundation of your health. But how do you know what type of orthotic is good for you? What is the difference between a custom and noncustom insole? Here Bryan Scott of Foot Solutions explains the options available to you in the orthotics and insoles market using a good, better, best model.

Do orthotics work? What kind of shoes are best?
Matt answers a common question about orthotics and how they can affect your pain and comfort levels. He also discusses what kind of shoes he prefers and why.
TL;DR: Orthotics affect the body but not always in good ways. Shoes that are flexible and spacious enough to allow good foot function are preferred. They do not have to be super minimalist with absolutely zero padding, but they also should NOT be super stiff with all kinds of extra support.
